E. J. Dionne writes a good column for Labor Day that is a reminder of how much we owe the 'labor movement' for providing a modicum of economic equality and a decent working environment for the working people of our country. I can personally attest to this, since my dad and my younger brother both made their living as members of the union shop at General Electric. They actually made things too--in their case, diesel-electric locomotives.
I can't help but think that we'll not be able to return to any kind of broad prosperity until something like the labor movement is restored. But I'm also not holding my breath.
