Yes, indeed, David Brooks has been liberated:
The Democratic response to the economic crisis has its problems, but let’s face it, the current Republican response is totally misguided. The House minority leader, John Boehner, has called for a federal spending freeze for the rest of the year. In other words, after a decade of profligacy, the Republicans have decided to demand a rigid fiscal straitjacket at the one moment in the past 70 years when it is completely inappropriate.
Brooks is talking like a true moderate/centrist in his column today. I agree with much of what he says, with the exception of energy/global warming. I think we have to move quickly there, because it is as much a crisis as the economy is, actually more so. The life of humanity and life as we know it, may hinge on what we do now.
The second priority would be health care, because of its potential to bankrupt the country, to the extent that we're not already bankrupt. You've got to get costs under control.
