The Superstate

We spent the day yesterday traveling to Florida, and when I wasn't driving, I was reading a recently acquired book entitled Cronies. It describes the rise of Texas into a 'superstate', based on the discovery of oil, the political domination of Congress, the resulting increase in military installations and industries located in the state, and their willingness to play political hardball.

I realize that I have never given Texas the place it deserves in the development of America's political economy and international relations of the last 70 years or so. That won't happen again.
