I think both candidates did in this debate what they had to do: Palin had to defend Palin, and Biden had to avoid acting like a cad against Palin while at the same time taking on McCain and his policies. Palin clearly avoided answering some questions, by returning numerous times to the area of her 'expertise', which is domestic oil production in Alaska. Biden demonstrated his superior knowledge of foreign policy due to his years in the Senate.
Over all, I agree with David Gergen on CNN that Biden won the debate, which, given my political preferences, makes it a very good night.
